Student Project-Painting Composites

Category: Compositing/Advertising

Target Audience: Women who attend upscale events such as horse racing or other social activities. Socialites.

Background: Photoshop is the ideal tool to composite two different mediums and blend them together. Utilizing masking and smart filters, I was able to use Amrita Shergil paintings of women and hats from Boussac to develop an advertisement.

Design Problem: Composite a product and a painting to create an advertisement.

The key to this project was to choose both paintings and product images that would be able to be composited together. To begin, I found Amrita Shergil’s paintings and discovered that they would work perfectly with hats. Finding product images of hats that were able to translate to the painting with masking and filters was difficult. I had to research different products and ensure that they had the correct angle to composite with the painting. Once I had the images, I began to mask the hat and then add smart filters to create a smooth blend between the two images. Color correction was also applied to match the painting.

Filters that were applied to create the “painted” effect were paint daubs, texturizer, and grain. The Paint Daubs was instrumental in creating the paint strokes. The texturizer made the material look like the canvas that the painting was created on. Finally, the grain ensured that the effect of taking a photo would be applied to the hats as well. Adjustments that were made included brightness and hue and contrast. When masking the painting, I used feathering to create a soft edge.
