Student Project-About Time

Category: Branding

Target Audience: Female focused. Ages 18+

Background: This project focuses on creating advertising and media to accompany one of my favorite films of all time, About Time.

For this project I wanted to create a simple drawing to go along with the simple design. From there, I decided to composite the image with a picture that resembles a scene from the movie. In addition, I found an image of water droplets to call back their wedding scene where it rains heavily. Despite the rain, they were still able to enjoy the day and make the most out of it.

The main challenge with this was filtering and editing the images to go along with the illustration. For the application and website, I wanted the design to be minimal in order to not distract from the product itself. To achieve this effect, I masked the illustration so that the blended images could follow the outline of the two main characters.

To learn and find the best solution for compositing all my elements, I used a trial-and-error process. I relied on the preview feature in order to see how the effect would look on my images and illustration. The blend mode that I used was soft light and I added a grain filter onto the illustration in order to better blend the images and illustration together. Moreover, in going with the theme of the movie, I wanted the overall feel of the design to be happy and colorful. With the images that I chose and the colorful illustration, I believe I was able to achieve my desired effect.
